Host Chris Andreae interviews former diplomat Colonel Ann Wright about her activism for peace. Ann just returned from a visit to Pakistan. She is in Portland to speak on a historic and courageous endeavor planned by Palestinian activists. They plan to build an Ark in Gaza, using existing resources and sail with a crew of Palestinians and internationals out of Gaza carrying Palestinian products to fulfill trade deals with international buyers in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade.

The chosen 100 were and are the radicals of their day who challenged injustice wherever they saw it: the monopoly and corruption of big business, exploitation of workers, U.S. militarism, legal inequity for women, blacks and minorities, degradation of the environment, voter restrictions on African-Americans, the gross discrepancy between haves and have-nots, etc.

On September 12th, the Portland City Council voted 5-0 to add fluoridating chemicals to our Bull Run water. This is a highly contentious issue, as Portlanders have already rejected forced fluoridation three times at the polls.

Joe Meyer hosts a program in two parts:

First he speaks with Howard Patterson, MEM (Masters Degree in Environmental Management), and Jeff Fryer, PhD in fisheries, about the impact of fluoridating chemicals after they go down the drain.

In the second part of the show he interviews Kimberly Kaminski, Executive Director Oregon Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, who is working on a referendum to reverse the City Council decision.

Arab Spring Conference Special, Part 1

In February, a group of scholars, activists, journalists, writers and thinkers met at Portland State University for a day of series and discussions called The Arab Spring: A Year That Changed the World.

The conference, organized by the campus group Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights, or SUPER, aimed to examine the events of the Arab Spring, its regional and international implications, and its effects on the future of Palestine.

KBOO was there, and is proud to present three lectures from the conference.

The first hour of the special features a lecture by student activist and cohost of KBOO's One Land Many Voices Wael Elasady, speaking on the ongoing revolt and humanitarian crisis in Syria.

A Citizen's Guide to Capitalism and the Environment is a manifesto for those environmentalists who reject schemes of “green capitalism” or piecemeal reform. Environmental and economic scholars Magdoff and Foster contend that the struggle to reverse ecological degradation requires a firm grasp of economic reality. Going further, they argue that efforts to reform capitalism along environmental lines or rely solely on new technology to avert catastrophe misses the point. The main cause of the looming environmental disaster is the driving logic of the system itself, and those in power—no matter how “green”—are incapable of making the changes that are necessary.

What Every Environmentalist Needs To Know about Capitalism tackles the two largest issues of our time, the ecological crisis and the faltering capitalist economy, in a way that is thorough, accessible, and sure to provoke debate in the environmental movement.

Fred Magdoff is professor emeritus of plant and soil science at the University of Vermont. His most recent books include Agriculture and Food in Crisis: Conflict, Resistance, and Renewal (edited with Brian Tokar), The ABCs of the Economic Crisis: What Working People Need to Know (with Michael Yates), and The Great Financial Crisis: Causes and Consequences (with John Bellamy Foster). John Bellamy Foster is editor of Monthly Review. He is professor of sociology at the University of Oregon and author of The Ecological Revolution: Making Peace with the Planet, The Great Financial Crisis (with Fred Magdoff), Critique of Intelligent Design: Materialism Versus Creationism from Antiquity to the Present (with Brett Clark and Richard York), Ecology Against Capitalism, Marx’s Ecology, and The Vulnerable Planet.
