The 'BOO is Alive - with the Sound of the Von Trapps!

The Songcircle
Air date:
Fri, 10/02/2015 - 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Short Description:
Portland's own Von Trapps sing for the 'Circle
We're delighted to welcome the Von Trapps to this week's Songcircle. They are Portland residents and, yes, the youngest generation of performers from the famous Von Trapp family depicted in the classic musical The Sound of Music. They've performed and recorded with Rufus Wainwright and Portland luminaries Pink Martini and Storm Large. The sound of the Von Trapps' own music features some of the old-fashioned innocence and sibling harmonies you might expect from the family franchise, joined to a contemporary sensibility.

Tim Buckley's lyricist, Portland's Larry Beckett, returns to The Songcircle!

The Songcircle
Air date:
Fri, 09/25/2015 - 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Short Description:
Tim Buckley collaborator Larry Beckett shares his new project!

The Songcircle welcomes back Portland's own Larry Beckett, lifelong friend and collaborator of the late, great Tim Buckley, who wrote the words to many of Tim's best-loved songs. He'll be joined by Stuart Anthony of England's The Long Lost Band, who have partnered with Larry on his first album-length project since his work with Buckley. They'll share songs from the release, One More Mile, in both live-on-air and studio versions.

Interview with Adam Franklin of Swervedriver - by Heather Lane

The Songcircle
program date:
Fri, 03/06/2015

Heather says:

As a devotee of the music of Adam Franklin since my early 20s, I was thrilled to have an opportunity to interview him upon the release of Swervedriver's new album, I Wasn't Born To Lose You, their first in over 17 years. This interview also marks my return to radio after a protracted bout of illness with Lyme disease and electrohypersensitivity, combined with a complete lack of diagnosis, which left me to languish for most of a decade.

As a musician myself, I relate to Adam's creative process and share influences. My conversational interview style is a result of my excitement to speak with my favorite musician, and also due to my place on the autistic spectrum. My enthusiasm and filter-free approach were met by Adam with engaged patience and just the kind of detail I was hoping for. Please enjoy and thanks for listening.

Songcircle 3/4/11 Interview with John Wesley Harding/Wesley Stace

The Songcircle
program date:
Thu, 03/10/2011

Singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding, a.k.a. author Wesley Stace, stopped by to discuss his new novel, Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer, about an early-20th-century opera composer whose career is cut short by a scandalous murder-suicide. Wes performed the folk ballad "Little Musgrave," which figures prominently in the novel's plot. He also shared two new tunes from his forthcoming, made-in-Portland album.

Following the approx. 50 minute interview is a brief snippet of British folk legend Nic Jones' "The Flandyke Shore"; Wes paid tribute to Jones on the great 1999 album, Trad Arr Jones, on which he first performed "Little Musgrave".

Leonard CohenField Commander CohenCan't Forget: A Souvenier of the Grand Tour

Surveying the careers of classic singer-songwriters David Blue and Eric Andersen.

Here is the text of Leonard Cohen's Elegy for David Blue:

"He died running, he fell beside the square, to the street where, many years before, he had begun to sing, he fell in the fullest expression of vanity and discipline. Many of us, in our songs, had touched on the type of man that he became. Dylan raised up such a ragged hero many times before he turned to solace in the shadow of American Chistianity. Joni Mitchell had spoken simply of that constant ambiguous lover, spoken of him over and over, before she entered the beautiful technology of jazz and virtuosity. Kris Kristofferson had described that gambler playing his way from Nashville to Hollywood, where finally the dangers of the game were too coarse for poetry.

David Blue was the peer of any singer in this country, and he knew it, and he coveted their audiences and their power, he claimed them as his rightful due. And when he could not have them, his disappointment became so dazzling, his greed assumed such purity, his appetite such honesty, and he stretched his arms so wide, that we were all able to recognize ourselves, and we fell in love with him. And as we grew older, as something in the public realm corrupted itself into irrelevance, the integrity of his ambition, the integrity of his failure, became, for those who knew him, increasingly important and appealing, and he moved swiftly, with effortless intimacy, into the private life of anyone who recognized him, and our private lives became for him the theaters that no one would book for him, and he sang for us in hotel rooms and kitchens, and he became that poet and that gambler, and he established a defiant style to revive those soiled archeypes. In the last few years, something happened to his voice and his guitar, something very deep and sweet entered, his timing became immaculate and we knew that we were listening to one of the finest, one of the few men singing in America and I was happy then and perhaps happier now to say that I told him that.

He did not put away his cowboy boots. He did not take a part-time job, he was fully employed in his defiance and his originality and his faithfulness to a ground, a style, an image of which he himself was the last and best champion exponent, a style that many of us had wanted, courted, and had not won. And finally, toward the end of his short and graceful life, he had the grace to recognize the woman to whom he had always been singing, and he courted and married Nesya and because a woman of talent and beauty does not choose lightly, she made manifest for all to plainly see the qualities of love and generosity that he had forced out of his distress. The death of such a man unifies us, and recalls to us how precious we are to one another."
