New Avenues INK is part of New Avenues for Youth's Social Purpose Enterprise Initiative (SPEI), which was launched in 2011 as an innovative approach to generating social value and long term self-sufficiency for at risk populations by operating a portfolio of businesses that offer employment opportunities, skills training through specialized modules and, in the future, a business incubator for youth entrepreneurship.
New Avenues has increased capacity and today with the support of our community, owns and operates two Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShops and New Avenues INK.
Owen does an interview with Scott and Eddie, two of the employees of New Avenues INK, where we learn about the shop, and the process of screenpriniting.

Frann Michel reports on Portland Public School and Portland Association of Teachers contract talks. Teachers are not fighting for wages, so much as work and ultimately learning conditions -- including class size, standardized testing, and prep-time during the day. She shares stories from teachers, students, and parents, exposing the District's false narrative of greedy teachers and austerity. She points out that the K-12 public school system, while not perfect, is not fundamentally broken as such and its problems cannot be traced to organized/unionized teachers, or else wealthier school districts and places like Finland would have comparably bad rates of success. 8:23 minutes (7.68 MB)
