Movie Moles: Prometheus

program date:
Mon, 06/11/2012

Movie Moles Joe Clement and Frann Michel discuss Ridley Scott's "Prometheus", which is the third prequel in the Alien movies he inagurated in 1979. Joe and Frann are a bit critical of this film, finding it lacking in coherent character development or plot, but still are able to talk about space-travel and corporate power, the (better) ground-up narrative-building in the earlier Alien film compared to Scott's auteurist idealism in Prometheus, overt and narrative-sexism, and the mystification of biology in the pursuit of "origins".

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 06/05/12

Air date:
Tue, 06/05/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
As Joe prepares for his annual hiatus, he and Abe survey the State of the Union.

The State of the Union is screwed. Four years into the New Depression, the economy still lags and working people suffer while the ruling class rolls in profligate wealth. Inequality grows more extreme. The wars drag on. The modern surveillance state is a reality. The planet grows warmer.

What's to be done? Do we play by the rules, and rely on our democratic institutions? If so, whom do we support? Does it matter? Is it time for a more creative solution?

In Joe's last show before his annual summer break, he and Abe survey the State of the Union.

Richard Heinberg - The End of Growth

Richard Heinberg - The End of Growth (lecture)

There is almost a mystical belief in growth. Nature’s bounty was there to be exploited by man. There is endless palaver about growth as an economic panacea that will cure all ills. Economists have long postulated that growth is normal and natural and could go on forever. But can it? Conventional views of growth are incompatible with the capacity and well being of the planet. The Earth Policy Institute says, we are “on an economic path that is environmentally unsustainable, a path that is leading us toward economic decline and collapse.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 05/29/12

Air date:
Tue, 05/29/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe ponder the recent preponderance of religious misbehavior.

Some three centuries into the Age of Reason, there still seem to be an inordinate number of public clashes between the secular and the sacred. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is using the two-week runup to the 4th of July to stage something called the "Fortnight for Freedom," a nationwide campaign aimed at ensuring that the Catholic Church (and other institutions) can continue to exercise their religious liberty by denying their employees access to contraception and abortion.
