October 6th marks the 1st anniversary of Occupy Portland, while October 7th is the 11th anniversary of the war on Afghanistan. Tune in to hear Ani and Lyn talk with organizers of the events scheduled for that weekend. 

A full weekend of action is being planned for this anniversary confluence.  On Saturday, at noon people will gather in Shemanski Park (SW Park and Salmon) for a rally, with a march following.  Marchers will re-gather in Shemanski for music.

On Sunday, there will be workshops and a speakers' panel discussion at the PCC Cascade Campus (N. Albina and Killingsworth).

Both events will connect the economic injustices of US policy to the wars and occupations. Events on both days will run from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM.

Host Kathleen Stephenson speaks with Mary Kyle McCurdy, Policy Director and Staff Attorney with 1000 Friends of Oregon and Cherry Amabisca of Save Helvetia, a coalition of farmers, business owners, concerned citizens, neighbors, and residents of the greater Helvetia area who are working to protect the Helvetia community and its neighboring agricultural lands.

1000 Friends of Oregon is challenging Metro’s urban and rural reserves plan. The plan, designating over 28,000 acres as future urban land, was recently approved by the Land Conservation and Development Commission, bringing 1000 Friends to petition the Oregon Court of Appeals for judicial review on behalf of several local farmers.

 Community Rights-Based Activism comes to Portland. Some 150 communities in 6 east coast states have passed local ordinances that strip corporations of their so-called "rights," banning corporate factory farming, fracking, water extraction for bottling, and more. West Coast communities are beginning to use this method, and here in Portland, Community Rights PDX (CR-pdx) is offering free workshops to teach us how.  Host Stephanie Potter welcomes Kenneth Jones and Susan Rankin, two workshop leaders with CR-pdx.

Diplomas Denied: Continuing the conversation about Portland's drop out crisis

More than 1,100 students drop out of Portland Public Schools every year. Many who fail to receive a diploma have been allowed to transfer into the district's alternative schools where graduation rates are extremely low or directed into going after a less-valued GED certificate. The Portland Public School District appears unable to reverse this trend or, more significantly, track students at-risk of dropping out. With so many solutions being offered, why hasn't the situation improved?

Portland Prepared

The Pacific Northwest has long been an area stricken by earthquakes and tectonic forces.  The problem is... no one thought to Google that information as they were building cities along the entire West coast, 200 years ago.  Then earthquakes started to level the cities of California in the 1800's and, in the early 1950's, Portland learned that we were also in the same boat.

It's no longer a case of 'if' it will happen, but 'when' and now that we know that, what we choose to do about our own personal preparedness can determine how well we will fare in the days after the next 'event of note'.
