Update on Nuclear Disaster in Japan with Nuclear Expert Arjun Makhijani

Day-to-day coverage of the ongoing nuclear disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power complex has slipped from the headlines. But the severity of the nuclear crisis in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan continues to unfold. Right after the earthquake, nuclear expert Arjun Makhijani was on Locus Focus discussing the short term and long range impacts from the damage to the Japanese nuclear facilities. He focused in particular on the danger of spent fuel rod pools overheating, something no one was talking about at the time.

SUNNYSIDE STUDENTS LAUNCH DONATION DRIVE FOR JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Sunnyside Elementary School's Student Council has organized a donation drive to help assist Medical Teams International with their disaster relief work to help victims of the earthquake in Japan.
They are seeking donations of money, personal care items, or learning kits by April 11.  Items can be delivered to the school, located at 13401 SE 132nd Ave. in Clackamas.  Checks can be made out to Sunnyside School.
To donate a Personal Care Kit, fill a gallon zip storage bag with these items:
-- 2 combs &/or brushes
-- 2 large bars of soap or 6-8 hotel-sized bars
-- 2 new washcloths in different colors
-- 3 adult-sized toothbrushes in different colors

Listen to Loen and Sho Dozono discuss their recent efforts raise disaster-relief funds for Japan's earthquake and tsunami survivors. They worked with a youth organization called Unite Youth to fold thousands of paper cranes and design t-shirts to raise awareness about Japan's continuing relief efforts.

Damaged nuclear reactors in Japan--a hazard here in the NW?

The damaged nuclear reactors in Japan are leaking radioactive material. Does this pose a health hazard here in the Pacific Northwest? If we had a similar earthquake, would we be subjected to high levels of radioactive fallout? Dr. Rudi Nussbaum and Lloyd Marbet will join host Marianne Barisonek for a discussion of radioactive contamination past, present and future. Dr. Nussbuam has studied the health effects of radiation on Hirsoshima-Nagasaki survivors and military personnel exposed to radiation at Hanford. Lloyd Marbet is known for his successful efforts to shut down the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant.
