Air date:
Tue, 06/21/2011 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Mr. President: With Joe on leave, Abe looks at the 7-decade growth of executive power in the U.S.

It's been nearly 70 years since the U.S. Congress has declared war. The current administration has enshrined and deepened the surveillance state first ushered in under the auspices of the Cold War and the War on Drugs, and then imposed under G.W. Bush's War on Terror. Once-inviolable rights to counsel, swift trial, due process, security from search and seizure, and habeas corpus have been rendered insubstantial.

Fear not, citizen, the President has your interests at heart. That's why he's wooing Wall Street.

It's been estimated that the winner of the 2012 presidential election will need to spend $1 billion to do it. In 2008, the financial sector, realizing it had been the catalyst for the economic meltdown, realized Barack Obama was a winner and decided to back him. This time around, he's making sure they back him again.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 06/07/11

Air date:
Tue, 06/07/2011 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Welcome to the Machine. The USA PATRIOT Act has been renewed for another four years.

The surveillance state ushered in under the reign of Bush the Younger was given a bipartisan imprimatur in late May when the USA PATRIOT Act was renewed for another four years. Warrantless wiretaps? You bet. Illegal searches of personal and business records? That's just how it is these days, because, you know, terrorism.

It appears that any hopes progressives may have had that President Obama would undo the Bush-era security state are unfounded. Whither from here? Abe and Joe survey the damage.

Host Stephanie Potter speaks Paul Stanford and Jennifer Alexander who are working to put the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act 2012 on the November, 2012 ballot. If passed this initiative would legalize the purchase of marijuana (through state licensed stores), license Oregon farmers to grow marijuana for state-licensed stores, and permit adults to grow their own. The act would also allow unlicensed Oregon farmers to grow cannabis hemp for fuel, fiber and food.
