Portland Opera is mounting a magnificent production with music by Benjamin Britten on Feb. 6th complete with a chamber orchestra and one of its largest casts... Art Spiegelman: Breakdowns

For the first time in three decades, Pulitzer prize-winning graphic novelist Art Spiegelman (Maus) has gathered his early groundbreaking comics into one volume.  The new edition of Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*! includes a new graphic memoir opening a window into both a personal and cultural history of the late 20th century. 

Art talks with S.W. Conser and Bill Dodge about comics as high art, breaking the media censorship of the Danish Muhammed cartoons, and creating picture books for children and grownups.

January 3rd - Playlist Spotlight

//www.amazon.com/Nascimento-Milton/dp/B000002ND1Bridget B. here, the Saturday, January 3rd show, An Evening of Afrotainment, was a bit reflective with a little nudge on how we the people, in 2009, can be change agents.  I went back in time to play some old "spirituals" using Amazing Grace and Ol' Man River as my easing in approach to the first segment of the show. 

It was 1927, Jerome Kern created the music and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the lyrics.  Show Boat was the musical that told the melancholy story of the hardships black people went through and the "...struggles of the time, related to the endless flow of the Mississippi River, from the view of a dock worker on a showboat. It is the most famous song from the show.  However, the most famous rendition of it, one that is still noted today, was sung by Paul Robeson in James Whale's 1936 film version of Show Boat (Robeson had first performed the song in the 1928 London production of the show and in the 1932 Broadway revival, and

Bread & Roses Show January 9, 2009 ~ Two Women Writers: Keepers of History

I'll be interviewing two local women writers, Anjala Ehelebe author of Images of America: Portland's Woodlawn Neighborhood and Jewel Lansing author of My Montana: A History and Memoir - 1930-1950.  Anjala takes us through a historic accounting of the Woodlawn neighborhood while Jewel shares with us what life was like growing up in rural Montana.  Both women are true "Keepers of History" and during this segment of Bread & Roses, you’ll hear the process each one went through in writing and publishing their work along with a live reading.
