Out Loud

Out Loud is KBOO's queer culture radio show, celebrating & serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning & allied communities. We feature interviews with community groups, authors, musical talent, and anyone from the queer & allied communities. We strive to give voice to those not heard in the main stream media.

Update on our schedule change for 2013 :: Out Loud will not air the last Tuesday of each month in 2013. Instead, you can enjoy 'Tune In, Turn On and Remember: 45 years of KBOO Community Radio'. This special public affairs programming consists of gems from the KBOO archives in celebration of our 45th anniversary!

Out Loud is a community created radio show. We need volunteers to help create Out Loud. Please consider getting involved, as there are many things that need to happen before, during and after each radio show. Your skills and contributions are welcome and needed! Email us if you have any questions about getting involved, or even if you just want to say 'Hi!'

Interviews with two new voices in the LGBTQ Community

 Coming to Out Loud Radio December 6th will be an interview with Jennifer Pizer, newly appointed Director of Research for The Williams Institute, a think tank focussing on LGBTQ issues in America. Jennifer will focus on the top Gay news items of 2011 and what she thinks we should watch for in 2012.

The second half of the show will be an interview I recently had with David Weekley, who for more than 28 years has been an ordained minister. David recently published his first book, titled, "In from the Wilderness" a fascinating memoir of his transgender journey.

 Coming to Out Loud Radio on November 15th is an evening with the Portland Gay Men's Chorus. Bob Mensel, Artistic Director for for PGMC will be in the studio to discuss the history of the chorus in Portland, as well as its future. In addition there will be plenty of music from past performances as well as music from their newest CD. Some of the music will be tied in to the upcoming World AIDS Day and how that event has shaped the direction that PGMC has taken. A human trafficked homeless 16-year old boy was asked what agencies in Portland could do in order to help him and thousands like him get off the street, he paused and then turned to the folks at a partnered organization and said “Obliterate Stark Street.”

Our first music break is from Joan Jett's 'Androgynous'

We welcome Chloe Flora back to the show to discuss Communi-T, Portland's trans resource fair happening at the QCenter on Nov 13 from 2:30 tp 6pm. Sasha, KBOO volunteer and Out Loud producer, joins the conversation too.

Music break with 'Deep River Hallow' from Ashleigh Flynn, Sneaking Out and Tracy Grammer. Ashleigh Flynn & Sneakin Out are playing live Sun Nov 13 at Crush as part of the after party for the Austin Unbound movie, featured on last week's radio show.

Our next segment features three brief spoken word pieces and an interview with students from Portland State University's Queer Resource Center. They discuss the many activities planned for Trans Day of Remembrance.

Focus on Queer Art

Tonight we welcome queers who make art to share their talents with the world!

We start off the show wiith a new music sample from local group Glitterfruit titled 'Gay Country Song'.

Next we move into a conversation with Eliza Greenwood, co-director of the film Austin Unbound. We also welcome Austin, the focus of this documentary, to the show. Austin is deaf, so an American Sign Language interpreter speaks on his behalf. Austin shares some background about his personal story and how this movie came to be created. The movie is showing in Portland Nov 12 & 13 at the Hollywood Theater, as well as Nov 15 at the Northwest Film Center. Everyone is also invited to the events planned in conjunction with the movie screenings. Details on their website.

Music break from Glitterfruit's "A Windy Night's Tale"

Max Voltage, half of the Glitterfruit duo, joins us to update us on their latest creative project. Max is a local event producer, so we also get a sneak tease of Homomentum PDX, in the works for this winter. Fruitillion, the debut show for Glitterfruit, is happening this Saturday at In Other Words from 7 to 9 pm.

We wrap up this segment with Glitterfruit's "Yelling In The Dark".

Community annoucement: On Monday, Nov 7 from 6 to 8pm, the Q Center and OMSI co-host a Family Science night at OMSI, located at 1945 SE Water Avenue. All LGBTQ families and their allies are invited!

Responding to AIDS Denialism

On this episode of Out Loud, we looked at a controversial, maligned and explosive topic within the medical and scientific community.  There is actually a small movement of people who question the existence of HIV and AIDS.  Many within the movement refer to themselves as dissidents, skeptics, or AIDS Rethinkers, while others call them AIDS Denialists.  Tonight you will hear from David Crowe, the president of Rethinking AIDS.  I also spoke with Brian Foley, a scientist with the National Institute of Health and a member of AIDS Truth, a website devoted to debunking the claims of so-called AIDS Denialists.  Later in the show, we’ll hear from Michael Kaplan, the executive director of the Cascade Aids Project.

Starting off the show is a music sample from La Pump titled 'Magnet'. This artist is performing as part of Electrogals, which is the feature for tonight's show.

Before we focus on Electrogals, Jake from Common Grounds Wellness Center, invites the gender queer and transgender community (and their friends/family) to the one year anniversary party of their trans and gender queer soak and sauna night. Hear from Q Center executive director Barbara McCullough-Jones, local leaders of the group Veterans for Human Rights, Portland Mayor Sam Adams, and many vets who servered under or were discharged under the military's repressive anti-gay policies.

Tonight we welcome Joe LeBlanc and Sasha Buchert from Basic Rights Oregon's Trans Justice Workgroup. We discuss the work of this group, including the recent victory with the City of Portland providing access to comprehensive health care for transgendered employees. Everyone is welcome at the celebration party happening this Thursday, beginning at 6pm at City Hall, located at 1221 SW 4 Ave in downtown Portland.

We take a music break with "The Ones", who were part of the 2010 Not Enough Festival.

Next we welcome organizers and artists from the Not Enough Festival. Edgar, Shanea and Jen are working behind the scenes to put together this year's festival. They brought testimonials from last year's festival to share with listeners. We also heard from Dexter Flowers, representing artists from last year, and Kaj-anne Pepper, representing an artist from the upcoming festival. Kaj-anne is a very busy artist, and invited everyone to a sneak peak of their Not Enough performance this Friday Sept 9th at Bent, happening at the Foggy Notion. Kaj-anne is also involved with the GenderFantasy event happening in early December at The Headwaters.

The Festival is kicking off with a party Friday night, as part of their collaboration with The Big GAY Warehouse Memorial Service! We hear from Alix, organizer of the original big Gay Warehouse in San Fran. Tickets to this event are being sold separately here.

Out Loud welcomes Electrogals

In our quest to feature more local music & local talent, tonight we welcome Electrogals. While this talented mix of female multi-media artists is not queer-specific, the group includes queer women.

Heather Perkins and Christi Denton join us, and both artists are performing at the upcoming Danger Zone! the 80s Cover Night event happening Sat July 16. We also covered the herstory of Electrogals, and plans for the Electrogals Festival happening in October at Disjecta.  Also, Electrogals events need volunteer support, so contact them to get involved (such as work the door, sell raffle tickets, staff the merch table, tech support & more)!
 
Music played during the show included Cloud Road and Great Curve (remix) from Heather Perkins. We also heard Love Your Enemies (remix) and Working Girl from Christi Denton.
 
The second half of our show featured This Way Out, the international gay and lesbian newsmagazine.

Out Loud celebrates Latino Gay Pride

June is typically Pride Month, but our pride won't be contained to one month alone. Our queer community is so awesome, we have three different pride events! Tonight we focus on Latino Gay Pride and we welcome organizers of this festival, including David Martinez, Vanessa La Torre, and Alejandro Juarez. Joaquin Lopez and Nurys Herrera perform live music during the show too.

The show started with Khalil Edwards joining us by phone to discuss the work of Portland PFLAG, the different chapters of PFLAG, and their upcoming fundraiser.

Next David shares the history of Portland's Latino Gay Pride, and Vanessa lets us know about the special Chicas Celebration happening on Sat July 16.

Joaquin and Nurys share a poem: I Can't Remember, and a song: Embrace Me. These talented musicians are part of Voz Alta: Amor Indocumentado.

The rest of the show features more live music from Joaquin and Nurys, and more details on other festival events. As a reminder, everyone is welcome at the Portland Latino Gay Pride events, including families at the Voz Alta performance, the Chicas brunch and the La Lucha Festival, since these are all ages events.
