This week Laurie feaures a special remembering the late Kate McGarrigle. McGarrigle--best known for her recordings with sister Anna and a folk music career that spanned four decades from the early '70's--passed away Monday at 63.
Music was a constant element in McGarrigle's life, from the family get-togethers of her childhood on down to her own children, the musicians Rufus and Martha Wainwright. She earned critical acclaim throughout her life for both her lovely voice and her songwriting: the sisters' songs were also covered by other big names like Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur.
This week's Movin' On takes some time to explore the musical world of this folk icon... if time allows we'll also hear some music by Hedge and Donna, Sid Brown and others.

I must locate that song you played today!
hello, I hope you read these comments as I didnt see a way to contact the show host directly via email.... so today (7/9/2010) almost near the end of your show you played a song where the lyrics talked about 'sisters of the road' ... 'you can find them down in old town' (which I assume is talking specifically about the very cool place = sister's of the road!)in the song it goes along and talks about the body of the buy who hopped trains was found @ the trainyard. anyways, it was an amazing song, and I'd love to find out who sings it and which album it's on so I can buy it, as it was a really great 'portland' song. thanks for everything you do -

The second to the last song you played was a very slow female singer. The only line I vaguely remember went something like "just say that she's a rambler, just say that she's..."?
Can you tell me the artist and song?
Thank you,
Where to find "I'm Gonna Let It Shine Choir" recordings?
Hi. I stumbled upon your show (and your station) last week, and I really loved the 2 songs by the group you identify as the I'm Gonna Let It Shine Choir. I have not been able to locate any of their recordings. Are they defunct? Along with their label? A search for Round River turns up nothing but Bill Harley. Thanks for any info.
Nevermind - I found it
Bill Harley apparently put together this compilation album in 1990, over the course of a weekend, in a barn. The full title is: I'm Gonna Let It Shine: A Gathering of Voices for Freedom. You can buy it and listen to clips here:

Thanks for making me aware of this great recording.

Today's show
Hi folks. I tuned in a little late and heard a gorgeous song at 12:10 or so. The song was sung by a female with a lovely voice, passionatley singing about dying love, some of the lyrics included "I can't see your face anymore" , "little girl gone" "children are crying, ", and I really would like to know who the artist is? Can anyone tell me please?
