Host Cecil Prescod interviews Christopher Phillips, author of "Constitution Café: Jefferson's Brew for a True Revolution."

Call in to discuss whether you think the Constitution should be revised every twenty years.

A radical in his own day, Thomas Jefferson believed that the Constitution should be revised periodically to keep up with the changing times. Instead, it has become a sacred, immutable text-and in Phillips's opinion, it's in need of some shaking up.

For his book Phillips gathered together Americans from all walks of life, moderating dialogues inspired by Jefferson's own populist political philosophy, formulating new Constitutional articles.

Host Cecil Prescod speaks with Professor Jeffrey Winters, author of the new book "Oligarchy," Winters says: "By choosing Wall Street as the origin of their action, and by focusing on the gap separating the 1% from 99%, the Occupy movement has hit upon the chronic problem of oligarchy and democracy in America. The power of concentrated wealth has overwhelmed and effectively disenfranchised the majority of American citizens. One person/one vote will be meaningless in U.S. politics unless the distorting power of wealth is addressed. Failing to do so could result in a deep crisis of legitimacy in American democracy."

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod interview James Kloppenberg about his book "Reading Obama: Dreams, Hope, and the American Political Tradition."

Intellectual historian Kloppenberg says the influences that have shaped Obama's distinctive worldview, include Nietzsche and Niebuhr, Ellison and Rawls, and recent theorists engaged in debates about feminism, critical race theory, and cultural norms. Kloppenberg argues that Obama's interest in compromise, reasoned public debate, and the patient nurturing of civility is a sign of strength, not weakness. He locates its roots in Madison, Lincoln, and especially in the philosophical pragmatism of William James and John Dewey, which nourished generations of American progressives, black and white, female and male, through much of the twentieth century, albeit with mixed results.

James T. Kloppenberg is the Charles Warren Professor of American History and chair of the History Department at Harvard University. His books include Uncertain Victory: Social Democracy and Progressivism in European and American Thought, 1870-1920; The Virtues of Liberalism; and A Companion to American Thought.

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod interview Daniel Martinez HoSang about his book Racial Propositions: Ballot Initiatives and the Making of Postwar California (American Crossroads), which looks at the controversial history of California's ballot measures over the past fifty years. HoSang is professor of Political and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. He will also discuss Oregon ballot measures and local concerns--especially efforts to expand prisons and attack labor rights in Oregon through recent ballot measures.

As the rest of the U.S. watched, California voters banned public services for undocumented immigrants, repealed public affirmative action programs, and outlawed bilingual education, among other measures. Why did a state with a liberal political culture, an increasingly diverse populace, and a well-organized civil rights leadership roll back civil rights and anti-discrimination gains? Daniel Martinez HoSang finds that, contrary to popular perception, this phenomenon does not represent a new wave of "color-blind" policies, nor is a triumph of racial conservatism. Instead HoSang uncovers surprising connections between the right and left that reveal how racial inequality has endured.

My error

Hi, Cecil, I called in to your fine program this morning to give the announcement about Imam Mamadou Toure's presentation at the Quaker Meetinghouse. Apparently I gave the wrong date: the correct date is Friday, January 25. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give that date on next week's program, I'm sorry to have confused things.
Peace, Jim Metcalfe
