In Missing Microbes, Dr. Martin Blaser invites us into the wilds of the human microbiome where for hundreds of thousands of years bacterial and human cells have existed in a peaceful symbiosis that is responsible for the health and equilibrium of our body. Now, this invisible eden is being irrevocably damaged by some of our most revered medical advances—antibiotics—threatening the extinction of our irreplaceable microbes with terrible health consequences. Taking us into both the lab and deep into the fields where these troubling effects can be witnessed firsthand, Blaser not only provides cutting edge evidence for the adverse effects of antibiotics, he tells us what we can do to avoid even more catastrophic health problems in the future.

Supersurvivors: The Surprising Link Between Suffering and Success

Over four billion people worldwide will survive a trauma during their lives. Some will experience severe post-traumatic stress. Most will eventually recover and return to life as normal. But sometimes, survivors do more than bounce back. Sometimes they bounce forward. Renowned psychology researchers David B. Feldman and Lee Daniel Kravetz interviewed dozens of men and women to understand how these individuals pushed beyond their experiences to attain greatness. We discover why certain delusions can be healthy, why forgiveness is good for the body, and why reflecting on death can lead to a better life. And, perhaps counterintuitively, we learn how positive thinking is not always a strategy toward the good.

Mon, 07/21/2014 - 11:00am - 11:30am
Short Description:
Do Fathers Matter? What Science is Telling Us About the Parent We've Overlooked with Paul Raeburn

For too long, we’ve thought of fathers as little more than sources of authority and economic stability in the lives of their children. Yet cutting-edge studies drawing unexpected links between fathers and children are forcing us to reconsider our assumptions and ask new questions: What changes occur in men when they are “expecting”? Do fathers affect their children’s language development? What are the risks and rewards of being an older-than-average father at the time the child is born? What happens to a father’s hormone levels at every stage of his child’s development, and can a child influence the father’s health? Just how much do fathers matter?

Short Description:
Toxin Toxout with Bruce Lourie

Two of North America's leading environmental activists give practical and often surprising advice for removing toxic chemicals and cleansing our bodies and homes. There are over 80,000 synthetic chemicals in commerce today, including hormone-disrupting phthalates and parabens, cancer-causing pesticides, heavy metals and air pollutants. Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie use their outrageous experiments (they and their brave volunteers are the guinea pigs) to prove how easily our bodies absorb these chemicals from the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we smear on our skin--day after day. Then they give us the good news about what is in our control and the steps we can take for reducing our toxic burden.

Joseph Keon, author of "Whitewash: The Disturbing Truth Behind Cow's Milk And Your Health"

 Hosted by Dr. David Naimon.

Today's guest is Joseph Keon, the author of "Whitewash: The Disturbing Truth Behind Cow's Milk And Your Health."

John Robbins, the author of Diet For A New America, says this about Whitewash in the foreword:

"I might be one of the last people you would expect to find questioning the value of dairy products for human health. Not that this is an easy question for most people. The assumption that dairy products are wonderful foods prevails throughout our culture with amazing tenacity. But in my family of origin, this assumption was held with a steadfastness that was virtually religious.
There was a reason. My father founded, owned and ran what became the world’s largest ice cream company --- Baskin-Robbins. Our house included a commercial-sized freezer with each of the 31 flavors, one for each day of the month. By the time I was 21, my father had manufactured and sold more ice cream than any human being who had ever lived on the planet. And he groomed me, his only son, to succeed him. It was his plan that I would follow in his footsteps.

So what am I doing writing a foreword for a book titled Whitewash: The Disturbing Truth About Cow’s Milk And Your Health? It turned out that I didn’t follow my father’s plan, but instead walked away from the company and the money it represented to become an advocate for a healthy and compassionate way of life. And that brings me to this marvelous book by Joseph Keon. Because if you are looking for the truth about dairy products and your health, if you are wanting to understand what scientific research has actually shown, this book is an immensely helpful resource. I consider it, in fact, the best book yet written on the subject."
