honoring don cornelius...

we have to say, we are in shock...  we just lost an elder, who was pivotal to our youth.  every saturday we would get up, excited to watch other young people dance to the latest songs on 'soul train'; and to hear its host, don cornelius with his deep, silky voice announce the guests.  cornelius had a dream to represent a people who he felt were not properly represented through media; and his dream was fulfilled with persistence and hard work.  'soul train' was unmistakable in connecting communities all over the nation- and eventually, world.

honoring ETTA JAMES, and COMMUNITY RADIO!!!

as we approach another year of KBOO-style community radio, we also approach another year of honoring those who have graced us with their artistic presence on this earth.  ETTA JAMES was a woman who was highly regarded in her field; at the same time, she remained unsung.  like aretha franklin, many are inspired by her, but there will never be anyone like her.  she was tough yet sensitive, in a world which encouraged the two to be mutually exclusive.

join us at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' from 7-10 pm as we honor ms. james, taking a tour of her artistic life; from the sentimental ballads right on down to the foundations of rock n' roll.

discussing the enemy expatriation act (!!!); and honoring james, otis and castor...

TIMES ARE URGENT, GOOD PEOPLE!!!  as SOPA and PIPA are 'indefinitely' ceased, the question we have at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' is, was the focus on these bills a coverup for the 'ENEMY EXPATRIATION ACT' (H.R. 3166 and S. 1698)?  the house bill was sponsored by congressmen charlie dent and jason altmire; the senate bill was sponsored by joeseph lieberman and scott brown.  clearly, this is NOT going to receive as much media attention as SOPA or PIPA, and many people may not have as much concern for this bill, because it seemingly does not effect them as directly, since many who protested these bills with access to the internet and other technologies use them daily.

debate distraction...?

with the republican debates currently happening, this tends to be a primary news story.  is it possible for this to be seen as a distraction to the actions taken by the administration currently in washington?

obama's full-on signing into law of the NDAA (despite claiming opposition to portions of the bill), as well as the issue of SOPA (the 'stop online piracy act') are getting virtually ignored by most (major) media, in order to cover these debates.  (1. is the NDAA signing the 'last straw' for obama supporters?  (2. how different are the two major parties in terms of policy?

dissecting 'good hair'- the film

as the conversation on hair is continuous for us at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!'; this week, we wanted to take the time to focus on the concept of 'good hair'- namely, the film.  amidst all of the positive reviews for the film, we wanted to see for ourselves how effective the message was in discussing the socio-political issues and connections regarding the so-called 'black hair industry'.

overall, 'good hair' is healthy hair; is this something the film conveyed, or did it perpetuate notions of corporatism/colonialism?

THANKFUL FOR THE FUNK!!!

we at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' are going to continue the vibe of the 'thanksgiving day soul fest' presented by shaheed and jay jay (from 12-8), by bringing a bunch of the funk!!!

we don't always get to revel in the funk; so we like to get a chance to do so at least once a year.  it will be a treat for you, as much as it will be for us!  we'll be giving you the straight traditional funk (stanky, nasty, underarm odor funk!), as well as some funky gems in the realm of rock, jazz, boogaloo, and then some!!!

remain connected, and thankful for the funk!!!

honoring OUR HEALTH, and HEAVY D!!!

we at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' like to return towards discussion of the health of our communities once in a while...  with the high-profile verdict of the conrad murray trial- for those who are not aware, murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in relation to the murder of our teacher michael- we felt it was a perfect time to return to this discussion.  since what we are seeing is beyond murray OR michael; we are curious to know if there will ever be a point where true justice will be served- that we return to WHOLISTIC ways of taking care of ourselves, and each other, as opposed to dependence on commercial/non-traditional pharmaceuticals and 'medicines'?

an interview with PATRICK LAMB: on honoring STEVIE WONDER (and a jimmy mak's tribute!)

Categories:
program date:
Thu, 02/16/2012

Portland-based Patrick Lamb, on Friday the 17th of February, will be honouring the greatest- STEVIE WONDER- at Jimmy Mak's (at both 7:30 and 10 pm)!!!  To make the evening even more special, Nate Watts and Tyrone Hendrix (STEVIE'S bassist and drummer, respectively) will be there to bring their joy...  Here, we speak with Mr. Lamb about the show and those who are involved; as well as what STEVIE means to him, amongst other things.

from patricklamb.com:

“One of the best instrumentalists I’ve ever worked with..” ~Bobby Caldwell

“Patrick Lamb’s playing and singing are simply fabulous!” ~Two–Time Grammy Winning Diane Schuur

Patrick is one of those extraordinary performers who combine raw talent, and energy with a singular ability to captivate an audience with his charm, sincerity and pure magnetism. His focus as a songwriter and performing artist is “Old School“ R&B, Soul. He combines the influences of Funk, Soul, R&B, and a flavor of Jazz to create his own unique sound as a performer and a songwriter.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Patrick began paying his dues by playing roadhouse music as a teenager in the rural south when he heard the evocative sounds of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Wilton Felder, of the Crusaders. He immersed himself in the music of these great artists and began to discover his own sound as both a musician and performer. In the eighties his father, a high school science teacher, took the family to Portland, Oregon. Once there, Patrick’s playing and singing were developing into a formidable career, which began at the early age of 16. Although having lived in the NW, Patrick found a way to infuse his southern roots and influences into his development as a musician, songwriter and performer.

Patrick accepted early on in his career, in the 90’s, the opportunity to perform and tour with Concord Recording Artist & GRAMMY -winner Diane Schuur. In addition to touring with Ms. Schuur, he recently joined legendary R&B vocalists Bobby Caldwell and Gino Vannelli to tour worldwide. Patrick has been honored with numerous awards starting with an acclaimed best soloist performance at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, resulting in a performance with Lionel Hampton. He has won 3 Muddy awards voted on by the NW music community, and recently was a finalist in the Rockstar Mix It Up contest. In addition, to his music based awards, Patrick’s production company was given the Spirit of Portland & the Caring Heart award for his contributions giving back to the community. In 1996 and 1997 Patrick was invited to perform at the White House during the holiday Congressional VIP Tours and was in attendance at “The Peace on Earth Celebration,” leading to a meeting with President Clinton. Patrick has been solidly and consistently recognized by his peers and community as a world class talent.

Patrick on Stage 2Over the past few years Patrick has been focusing on his own recording career as both a songwriter and performer. He recently completed five studio albums and produced an award winning show “Let The Good Times Roll, A Tribute To Ray Charles.” A Tribute To Ray Charles, debuted at the 2005 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival and the 15 piece big band All-star group released a CD produced by Lamb at the 2006 festival during the tributes encore performance. The tribute has received stellar reviews both regionally and nationally, and the show opened the 2007-08 Oregon Symphony Pops season.

Patrick completed work on his latest solo project, ‘Soul Of A Free Man’ which was released, in Spring 2007. Patrick’s new solo vocal CD bridges together his love of Funk, “Old School” R&B, Soul, Jazz and his southern roots. This CD was co-written with long time friend, singer-songwriter Lee Garrett, whose songwriting credits include ‘Sign Sealed Delivered,’ ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You’ and more!

In addition to these two projects Patrick finished work on a vocal duet and instrumental CD with nine-time Emmy award winning producer John Henry, and three-time Emmy nominated singer songwriter Patsy Meyer. This project was released in late Spring of 2007. Patrick’s final release in 2007 was with Michael Allen Harrison titled “At Midnight.”

Patrick has appeared on other recordings with Gino Vannelli, Jeff Lorber, Tom Grant, Eddie Martinez, Dave Weckel, Nathan East, Ricky Lawson, ‘Little John’ Roberts, Alex Al, Bill Cunliffe, Tony Madian, Curt Bisquera, Herman Jackson, Mel Brown, Marlon McClain, Nate Phillips, The Crazy 8’s, George Mitchell, Dan Balmer, Paul deLay, John Raymond, Paul Jackson Jr., Tony Gable, and many others.

Patrick also demonstrates a deep sense of community awareness and civic responsibility. He has performed for numerous fund- raisers to raise consciousness about the loss of funding for the arts in public schools. In addition, he has been involved with major civic efforts to raise money for the America Diabetes Association, Oregon Food Bank, the American Cancer Society, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, The Christie School, ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington. One can’t help but be moved by the huge heart of this young man as it comes though in his civic awareness…and in his exuberant energy to entertain and uplift people.

interview with alexyss k. tylor, of vpowerTV (part one)!!!

Categories:
program date:
Mon, 05/18/2009

DISCLAIMER: THIS INTERVIEW HAS LANGUAGE AND CONTENT SOME MAY DEEM OBJECTIONABLE.  MUCH DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

what exactly can one say about alexyss k tylor, without stumbling into utter cliche or travelling into euphemism (for those 'sensitive' folk)?  the truth is, you have to meet her to figure out a word for yourself.

at all points undefinable and inimitable by ANY basic term, atlanta, georgia-based ms. alexyss k tylor is not one who plays around.  you have got to get your act (and your words) together when speaking with her.  even with someone like me who does radio, admittedly this is not always easy.  one interview with this laconic (and ICONIC, to a growing number of people) woman is never going to capture her range- the humor, the warmth, and the love for what she does.  what you ALWAYS get though, is her brand of truth and conviction.  some may see it as brash, vulgar or 'politically incorrect' but it is a truth she stands firm in.  and that is phenomenally admirable.

known mostly as a 'sex guru', ms. tylor is the author of 'spiritual sexuality' and 'vagina power' (which is also the name of the movement she has prompted); she also has a(n) (inter)nationally-recognized television program.  she speaks candidly about spiritual sexuality, as well as political issues affecting us.

this is from alexyss' youtube page:

"She is the author of spiritual sexuality vagina power, as well as a talk show host of VPOWER with Alexyss K Tyler!!! She talks about spiritual sexuality vagina power, penis power, sperm power. so many women are used, abused and really misunderstand the power of sex and the beauty of the vagina. we are a sacred temple of divine creation and i am so honored to be a woman and so honored by the women that want to learn about the power of our body. teaches about sex chakras, the auric field and how to use them to reach ultimate orgasms."

at the end of the interview (part 2), ms. tylor has mentioned ways to contact her.

if you have never seen any videos of this stunningly beautiful woman, i suggest you check them out...  as i said, there are no words i could write here that would even describe her.

all i will say is that it was an honor to speak with her.

Chris (guest for 9-10-09)

Hi Jamilah,
Loved the show tonight - I was really struck by Chris' story and how ridiculously the Portland police handled his situation.  It makes me concerned for the future of civic-minded organizations like Copwatch and NoPo Cop Stop which exist to do exactly what Chris was doing - observe & record police conduct and provide that record as a defense to the people who police accuse of wrongdoing.

Would it be possible for KBOO to post tonight's show or, at least, the fifteen minutes that Chris spoke about his encounter with Portland police on your webpage or myspace page?  I would be very interested to listen to it again and pass it along to my friends at Copwatch, if that is okay.  I believe the segment ranged between 8:45 pm - 9:00 pm.  Please feel free to e-mail me with a response - it would be great to hear from you.  Thank you very much for your help, and keep up the excellent work!

motown

Hey I love motown and motown history and it is sorta at the top of my list of interests right now, so if I wanted to offer some insight into your upcoming program, what is the protocol? Is there any way to get involved?

motown

yes, i am actually planning to do another show on motown; i didn't get to fit everything i wanted to fit into the show... my plan is to do something in april. i would like to go more in depth about what i was touching on in the last show... is it possible for a 'person of colour' to be successful in america and not sacrifice or compromise their beliefs? i want to do more in-depth conversations/interviews about that.

i am constantly welcoming people to get involved and have some input for the show, so that is wonderful that you are interested!!! what sorts of things were you thinking about?

speak soon,
peace,
jamilah
