a discussion on freedom...

there is a question we believe we will always continue to ask:  ARE WE FREE?  is freedom a myth, or are there elements of truth to it?  is it deemed to be primarily political; or does it lend itself towards a spiritual or philisophical meaning as well in these times?

the willie lynch letter: myth or model?

the willie lynch letter: it is a document recognized as a model of perpetuating a structure of slavery for african peoples, particularly in the u.s.

the letter gained national recognition in the 1990s; because of this, there continues to be a debate regarding it's authenticity.  is it a hoax, or was it simply unearthed after many years at that time?  if indeed it is a hoax, who is the author?  is it written in malice or concern?  is it a satire?

is the 'willie lynch letter' merely a written outline of what black people are doing to themselves?  is it written in order to get people to awaken from their conditioned slumber?

...honouring the teacher, radio 2012 style...

we are taking another year to reflect on the works of our teacher (and ancestor) michael jackson.  even though we have come to terms with his transition it still has been hard for us during different points of the year.  however, we do our best to honour him as much as we can to the best of our abilities; and we continuously marvel at how much we learn something new every day when it comes to him.

honoring the creative light of women!

we at 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' want to take the time out to honor the creative light of women- women who compose, produce and/or arrange their art.  because there is such a focus on women as simply singers or dancers, it is rare to hear the narratives of those who take charge of the creative process:  women such as angela winbush, tawatha agee, rachelle ferrell, teena marie, betty wright, lalah hathaway, gwen guthrie and many others.

one such person who takes charge of the creative process and uses it for good is blue, the 'portland by way of st. louis' songstress.  blue will be here with us to celebrate this creative spirit.

police accountability: does it exist?

in light of the recent police shootings of an unarmed person in anaheim, california, as well as the detaining of four black males (for over an hour!) and raids (with some grenades thrown) in homes (at the hands of the FBI, local police and the joint terrorism task force) in portland, oregon, seattle and olympia, washington; the police are becoming more and more unruly- or is it that we are only now able to see the increase due to technology?

Chris (guest for 9-10-09)

Hi Jamilah,
Loved the show tonight - I was really struck by Chris' story and how ridiculously the Portland police handled his situation.  It makes me concerned for the future of civic-minded organizations like Copwatch and NoPo Cop Stop which exist to do exactly what Chris was doing - observe & record police conduct and provide that record as a defense to the people who police accuse of wrongdoing.

Would it be possible for KBOO to post tonight's show or, at least, the fifteen minutes that Chris spoke about his encounter with Portland police on your webpage or myspace page?  I would be very interested to listen to it again and pass it along to my friends at Copwatch, if that is okay.  I believe the segment ranged between 8:45 pm - 9:00 pm.  Please feel free to e-mail me with a response - it would be great to hear from you.  Thank you very much for your help, and keep up the excellent work!

motown

Hey I love motown and motown history and it is sorta at the top of my list of interests right now, so if I wanted to offer some insight into your upcoming program, what is the protocol? Is there any way to get involved?

motown

yes, i am actually planning to do another show on motown; i didn't get to fit everything i wanted to fit into the show... my plan is to do something in april. i would like to go more in depth about what i was touching on in the last show... is it possible for a 'person of colour' to be successful in america and not sacrifice or compromise their beliefs? i want to do more in-depth conversations/interviews about that.

i am constantly welcoming people to get involved and have some input for the show, so that is wonderful that you are interested!!! what sorts of things were you thinking about?

speak soon,
peace,
jamilah
