KBOO Artist in Residence TESSIE WORD opening of Convergence

Convergence is an audio documentary and sonic art work that examines the historical, environmental, and sociological ramifications of living in an imminent ecological disaster area: the tsunami zones of the Oregon Coast near the mouth of the Columbia River. Through the use of phonographic recordings, radio transmissions, and original music, Convergence explores and interprets the cultural implications and the psychic terrain of daily life in the tsunami zone.

The multi-media installation will be featured at Civilian Studios,
Friday, November 14th-December 14th.

Convergence was completed by Tessie Word as the 2014 KBOO Radio Artist in Residence.

Tessie Word was the 2014 KBOO Community Radio Artist In Residence. The program aims to assists artists working creatively with sound. Every year, one artist or one collaborative group of artists will be awarded twenty hours of studio recording and production time with a KBOO Mixologist in order to create a piece of sound art that will be publically presented at the end of the Residency.

The goals of the KBOO Artist Support Program are to support and invest in individuals who are pushing themselves artistically using sound, whose work will impact the cultural landscape of Portland, and to bring those artists into the dynamic KBOO community of local, national, and international artists and activists.

KBOO has stopped accepting donations for annual Book & Record Sale

KBOO is getting ready for our Annual Book and Record Sale.  While the deadline to contribute your donations of books, records, CDs, DVDs, etc., has passed, we certainly hope you attend the sale this Sunday, Sept. 14th, 9 - 5 pm.  The sale is being held at the Volunteers of America Hall, at 537 SE Alder (the door is on the corner of SE 6th & Alder). 

Drop by, enjoy great KBOO DJs spinning records all day, and pick up some great bargains while contributing to your community!

Visiting Pakistani Journalist Sadia Khan speaks at KBOO

KBOO will host a free, community forum where visiting Pakistani journalist Sadia Khan will discuss her pioneering work in Pakistani media, Thursday, March 20th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the station located at 20 SE 8th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97214 (one half block south of Burnside). 

Ms. Khan currently lives and works in her home city of Lahore, Pakistan, the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab. Previously she worked for 7 years in Islamabad, covering the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, multiple bomb blasts, earthquakes and floods.  She will join the KBOO newsroom beginning Monday, March 10th and assist in all aspects of news and public affairs at KBOO until March 31st.

45 DJs PLAY ONLY 45 RPM RECORDS FOR TWELVE HOURS TO CELEBRATE THE 45th BIRTHDAY OF KBOO COMMUNITY RADIO. KBOO Community Radio went on the air in 1968, and we are celebrating our 45th year with an on air special! We will highlight the 45 rpm vinyl single on November 16th from Noon to Midnight. 45 KBOO DJs and Community Members will be on the air with 15 minute sets playing only 45 rpm records. We are celebrating the 45rpm single, and the history and future of KBOO Community Radio.

We will also be hosting an open house from Noon - 8pm with birthday cake, tours of the radio station, and more during the special. The open house is free and all ages. KBOO is located at
