LaDuke's show in the APEX section of the Pacific Northwest collection shows Oregon agricultural workers on painted plywood. Laing-Malcolmson will talk about this southern Oregon artist's long history of painting rural subjects and LaDuke's empathy with her subjects.

Art Focus is off today. Instead we'll hear a speech by the late feminist leader, writer, and activist Betty Friedan, author of “The Feminine Mystique,” In 1995 she spoke before a group of American Women in Radio & TV on media & economic scapegoating as engines of anti-woman backlash.

Friedan co-founded Women, Men & Media. She also was one of the founders of NOW, the National Organization for Women. She died in February 2006.

On Tuesday April 21 at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Zemie Barr, the Director of Exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery. Barr will talk about the 2015 Pacific NW Photography Viewing Drawers, which features ten photos each by 62 photographers from around the Northwest. Viewers  must open the drawers in the gallery and handle the photos. Barr focuses on trends in photography, the wide range of methods on display and the use of cell phone cameras.

The show runs throughout 2015.

The New Urban Aesthetics: The Black Arts Movement Revised
We hear a forum on "The New Urban Aesthetics: The Black Arts Movement Revised" sponsored by the Harlem Book Fair at the  Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
The Black Arts Movement was once described by Time magazine as the "single most controversial moment in the history of African-American literature " possibly in American literature as a whole." It was started in Harlem by writer and activist Amiri Baraka. The movement was triggered by the assassination of Malcolm X and among the well-known writers who were involved with the movement were Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, Hoyt W. Fuller, and Rosa Guy. The movement is also seen as one of the most important times in African-American literature.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Steve Grafe [PRONOUNCED GRAFF] , Director of Art at the Maryhill Museum of Art in the gorge, near Goldendale, Washington.

Grafe will talk about the new season at Maryhill, which includes American Indian painting from the 20th Century, photography of the making of the Columbia River Scenic Highway, glass work by Puget Sound artist Raven Skyriver, and folk textiles from Romania.

This show is edited by KBOO Volunteer Sam Parrish.

 Todd Tubutis of the Director of Blue Sky Gallery was our guest on Art Focus. We covered the current Robert Frank show, Painkiller. We also talked about other shows at Blue Sky and his own path to the gallery.

Painkiller is an original exhibition of 48 Polaroid images by groundbreaking photographer Robert Frank taken from the 1970s through the present. Blue Sky closely collaborated with Frank in selecting photographs to be reproduced in a special series of enlarged prints for this show. Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of photography, Frank has redefined the aesthetic of both the still and the moving image via his pictures and films. Blue Sky is proud to present Frank’s work again in Portland, having first shown his photographs in 1981.

Local homeless youth are collaborating with artists and businesses to beautify our town, via New Avenues for Youth.

Billions and Billions of People collaborative art Installation is transforming a construction site into a work of art. With the vision and support from a premier real estate development company, TMT Development, thirty local homeless youth served by New Avenues for Youth had the unique opportunity to work alongside an internationally famed artist, earn a paycheck and feel connected to the city they call home.


That artist would be Chris Johanson. He joined us (via phone) - plus the Associate Executive Director Sean Suib and two of the youth participants  - on Art Focus.
