On Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 11.30am, Joseph Gallivan interviews Mary Weaver Chapin, the Curator of Graphic Arts at the Portland Art Museum. Chapin talks about David Hockney's 16 etchings called A Rake's Progress. She will also discuss his stage and costumes designs done ten years later for Igor Stravinsky's opera The Rake's Progress. The works are on display at PAM alongside copies of William Hogarth's original engravings which inspired Hockney.

Smith will talk about the imagery he uses to assess the African American experience, the interplay between painting and looking, and how his painting voice compares to his spoken voice.

LaDuke's show in the APEX section of the Pacific Northwest collection shows Oregon agricultural workers on painted plywood. Laing-Malcolmson will talk about this southern Oregon artist's long history of painting rural subjects and LaDuke's empathy with her subjects.

Art Focus is off today. Instead we'll hear a speech by the late feminist leader, writer, and activist Betty Friedan, author of “The Feminine Mystique,” In 1995 she spoke before a group of American Women in Radio & TV on media & economic scapegoating as engines of anti-woman backlash.

Friedan co-founded Women, Men & Media. She also was one of the founders of NOW, the National Organization for Women. She died in February 2006.

On Tuesday April 21 at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Zemie Barr, the Director of Exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery. Barr will talk about the 2015 Pacific NW Photography Viewing Drawers, which features ten photos each by 62 photographers from around the Northwest. Viewers  must open the drawers in the gallery and handle the photos. Barr focuses on trends in photography, the wide range of methods on display and the use of cell phone cameras.

The show runs throughout 2015.

The New Urban Aesthetics: The Black Arts Movement Revised
We hear a forum on "The New Urban Aesthetics: The Black Arts Movement Revised" sponsored by the Harlem Book Fair at the  Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
The Black Arts Movement was once described by Time magazine as the "single most controversial moment in the history of African-American literature " possibly in American literature as a whole." It was started in Harlem by writer and activist Amiri Baraka. The movement was triggered by the assassination of Malcolm X and among the well-known writers who were involved with the movement were Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, Hoyt W. Fuller, and Rosa Guy. The movement is also seen as one of the most important times in African-American literature.

On July 10TH Bobby Abrahamson, Julia Dolan and Myles Haselhorst discussed North Portland Polaroids, which encompasses 2 exhibitions and a book. Abrahanson shot the photos - the shows are at Blue Sky and Ampersand Gallery, which Haselhorst curates. Dolan, Minor White Curator of Photography curator from the Portland Art Museum, wrote the essay for the book.
