Alternative Radio

Alternative Radio, established in 1986, is a weekly one-hour public affairs program offered free to all public radio stations in the US, Canada, Europe and beyond. AR provides information, analyses and views that are frequently ignored or distorted in other media.

Our program is carried by over 125 radio stations and heard by millions of listeners. It is produced by David Barsamian in Boulder, Colorado.

Alternative Radio is sustained by donations and by your purchases of season subscriptions, recordings and transcripts. You can make a donation, including a recurring amount charged to your credit card each month, from our donations page.

Because Alternative Radio is a syndicated program, we don't have the permissions from them to post their audio files or transcripts. If you go to the Alternative Radio website, you can download their interviews and lectures for a very low price, and help support their work.

Short Description:
Tavis Smiley on The Hidden Dr. King

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr has been shrink-wrapped and formatted to be innocuous and non-threatening. Dream speeches, desegregation, voting rights, and Selma marches could be accommodated. But when he articulated a critique of the system as a whole then he became a danger to the establishment. That Dr. King has been largely obscured. At Riverside Church in New York he said the Vietnam War was “a symptom of a far deeper malady.” And then he added, “We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial.

Justin Lewis - Media & Consumer Capitalism

Orchestrated wants driven by sophisticated advertising techniques have created a culture of consumption. Appetites for the latest hot thing are engineered. Media campaigns sell cool and sexy. Marketing is key. Data are collected. People are profiled, then targeted. Cell phones. Have to get the latest one with all new features, faster processor and design. We can't be left behind. More sales means more profits. The capitalist economic system is predicated on making money and barely considers the environmental effects down the road. That's somebody else's problem. In the U.S., consumerism is connected to ideology. Freedom is equated with the ability to buy things. But the pattern of endless consumption is not sustainable.
