Alternative Radio

Alternative Radio, established in 1986, is a weekly one-hour public affairs program offered free to all public radio stations in the US, Canada, Europe and beyond. AR provides information, analyses and views that are frequently ignored or distorted in other media.

Our program is carried by over 125 radio stations and heard by millions of listeners. It is produced by David Barsamian in Boulder, Colorado.

Alternative Radio is sustained by donations and by your purchases of season subscriptions, recordings and transcripts. You can make a donation, including a recurring amount charged to your credit card each month, from our donations page.

Because Alternative Radio is a syndicated program, we don't have the permissions from them to post their audio files or transcripts. If you go to the Alternative Radio website, you can download their interviews and lectures for a very low price, and help support their work.

Paul Cienfuegos – Corporations vs. People (lecture)

The United Supreme Court decision gave corporations a green light to secretly funnel in as much money as they want to elect candidates. The justices in their supreme wisdom have once again privileged corporations over citizens.

The results have been dramatic. Even with a weak economy a record amount of cash has flooded political campaigns.

Michael Parenti on "Superpatriotism"

Samuel Johnson in the 18th century said, "Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels." Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But for certain today, patriotism is a battleground. Being labeled unpatriotic or anti-American have become routine terms of abuse. Somehow the state has been invested with some extraordinary power and people are to be silent and obey in respectful awe. As Martin Luther King, Jr said in his great Riverside Church speech in 1967, "Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth, citizens do not easily assume the task of opposing their government's policy, especially in a time of war." Perhaps true patriotism would be to raise uncomfortable questions that challenge the official story.

Arun Gupta - Economic Crisis & the Tea Party (lecture)

You’ve played by the rules. Went to work every day. Paid your bills and taxes. When your country summoned you to fight in its wars you were proud to serve. You’ve worked hard all your life and now what do you get? Bupkis as they say in Yiddish. Goat droppings. Your job was outsourced overseas. Your house has been foreclosed. You’re in debt. Meanwhile, the big banks are sitting pretty on tons of cash. The stock market and corporate profits are up. GE made billions in 2010 and didn’t pay a dime in taxes. With this backdrop in walks the Tea Party. They got the answers. You know why you are getting shafted? It’s the immigrants, gays, uppity women, minorities, liberals, unions, and public service workers.

Helen Caldicott  - Hiroshima to Fukushima (lecture)

The disaster at Fukushima has thrust the dangers of nuclear power back in people’s consciousness. The idea of an industry renaissance had been carefully orchestrated by corporations that stand to make tons of money. Politicians, ever mindful of who funds their campaigns, have gone along. It was hailed as a clean and safe solution to addressing climate change and energy issues.

An irony of the still unfolding tragedy is that it occurred in Japan, the only country to be attacked by nuclear weapons. The fallout from the fallout has spread around the world. Germany is planning to phase out nuclear power.

Howard Zinn – Just & Unjust Wars (lecture)

Howard Zinn – Just & Unjust Wars (lecture)

From ancient Athens to 21st century America, the rhetoric is the same. When "the dogs of war" are set loose, there is a cascade of jingoistic platitudes and cliches. We want peace. When we fight a war, it is just. We are good. The enemy is evil. We are victims seeking justice. We are making the world safe for democracy. And if they were honest they'd add, We are making the world safe for lexical and moral hypocrisy. Erasmus, the great 16th century philosopher monk, said of war, "There is nothing more wicked, more disastrous, more widely destructive, more loathsome." He then added that war was useful to a government for it enabled it to extend its power over citizens.
