'WarMart' Comes to Town plus: Picking Up The Pieces in Gaza

Air Cascadia
program date:
Mon, 11/26/2012

Black Friday, Indeed...

In Gaza, every Friday is Black. The funeral march has no foreseeable end. But it definitely has a beginning.

And Yes, Virginia:  there is difference between the role of the souldless soldier, firing at human beings stripped of their humanity in the eye of the gun.  There is a difference when the aggressor has a home to return to and the target has no where to run.

Even before these latest Israeli atrocities, Gazans were suffering att he hands of their tormentors.  Packed into a tiny strip of territory and forbidden the most basic necessities:  building mateials, food, water, medicine...they survived.

If a foreign country had done to America what Walmart has, it would be considered an act of war.

Peace is a Message in a Bottle

Truce with Israel? Think about the image of a small boy sitting beside his dead mother, waiting for her to wake up...Think about it...

Think about a school bus full of children, charred, still smoking.

Think about an old woman alone in the ruins.  Her home reduced to the dirt beneath her feet.

Think about Netanyahu in DC agreeing to a moratorium on  settlements while back in Occupied Palestine more land is bulldozed, more settlements built.

Think about a Wall sepatating a farmer from his land.

Think about the farmer's son gunned down by the IDF for playing ball too close to the Wall...

Think about families rendered homeless in their homeland...

Think about Coca Cola in Gaza: a mesage in a bottle.

“I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.”

The International Middle East Media Center is a primary source for news of the atrocities being committed by Israel in Gaza.  Go there.

The Zionists do not want you to read about that, they do not want you to hear and see the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people in different parts of occupied Palestine, especially in the besieged and improvised Gaza Strip.
The war, and the cyber war, goes on and we will continue our coverage of the news, we will resist, and we will continue to refuse to be silenced.
Silence is complicity, as the illegal war against the children of Gaza continues, the illegal cyber war continues, and the IMEMC will never be silenced.
Every time there is an Israeli military escalation on Gaza, cyber-attacks against the IMEMC intensify, and our determination grows stronger.

Cascadia Incandescent:

While the rest of the world goes off it’s beezer and rolls in the blood of baby corn, Meanwhile, back in Court…Sierra Club and Columbia Riverkeeper, Citizens Against LNG, and the American Public Gas Association have filed comments with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

This is what protest looks like:  No the application filed by LNG Development Company, LLC (d/b/a Oregon LNG) to export LNG.  Issues raised in the comments include potential environmental damage resulting from increased hydraulic fracturing and higher natural gas prices to American consumers that could result from approval of the proposal. The filings are available on DOE's website under Docket No. 12-77-LNG.

And It Just Desn't Smell Like News If The Police Aren't Involved....

Not only do the Portland police want the right to shield their own from the consequences of their own crimes against the people they are paid to serve and protect, now they also want to overturn the will of voters in the community that pays them to serve and protect.

The Portland police union is challenging reforms voters overwhelmingly approved this month to the Portland Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Fund. The reforms are expected to save taxpayers $47 million over 25 years.

This week Portland Police Association filed a grievance with city officials to block the reforms from taking effect. The union contends the city failed to negotiate changes that will affect members' pension and disability benefits.

And as if that wasn't enough, the union wants the city to restore past practice and make its approximately 950 members "whole in all ways, plus interest."

City Commissioner Dan Saltzman called the union's move disturbing. He said he wants the city to pursue a state legislative change that would insulate the public safety pension and disablity fund, as well as the city's general fund, from such challenges.

"As far as I'm concerned, nothing is going to stop the reforms from taking effect," Saltzman said. "It's pretty outrageous that the police association files a grievance to block what voters overwhelmingly approved -- that they don't feel honor-bound to the will of the voters."

Portland police Officer Daryl Turner, president of the Portland Police Association, filed the grievance on Tuesday, one week after 75 percent of city voters approved the reform package.

Rebooted or Rebuted? Obama 2.0

Air Cascadia
program date:
Wed, 11/14/2012

"You can lead, you can follow or you can get out of the way..."

“Change you can believe in,”? The “best is yet to come.”? Four years on from the first half-African-American president took office freedom for the average American - that is to say one who does not have high level security clearance - looks very different.  Civil liberty advocates are working overtime attempting salvage what's left of the Bill of Rights.  And the skull-busting part is that Barack Obama is a Constitutional Law Scholar.

Obama continued many of the most outrageous abuses of the George W. Bush administration: indefinite detention, warrantless surveillance of American citizens, the metastasized power of the “imperial president”, the ability to assassinate American citizens abroad and unilaterally authorize drone strikes resulting in the deaths of countless innocent civilians, including women and children.  And dangling over the whole scenario is the potential threat of a federal ‘Home Invasion’ and subsequent  solo performance before a grand jury.

But what is the first step in dismantling Fort Fed? And who has the courage, wit and stamina to confront an army of lawyers tasked with defending the indefensible?  America as a nation has become obsessed with ‘celebrity heroes’ for so long they don’t know what leadership looks like.  And worse still, there is a deep distrust for ‘intellectuals’ on both the Left and the Right.  When this unspoken fear finds itself in the presence of ‘leader lighter’, it tends to flare up.  Despite an agonizingly long election drama, Americans make bad choices.  Candidates representing the superstitions of an uneducated rabble rise to power and then wonder how all this government stuff works.  But we can’t complain:  The education industry combined with the entertainment industry are designed to produce passive minds lacking any semblance of curiosity; minds that view politicians as ‘products’ – which of course they are. The Electorate is asked what it “feels” about the candidate, never what it “thinks”. Presidents are elected on the basis of whom the voters would rather drink beer with.  Decisions are made based on personal greed and the drive to defend the family ‘s perimeter.  Choices are made based on short-term gain.  Equipped with no knowledge of anything; no history or geography.  Instead, it’s called ‘Civics’ and it is a colossal failure.  No literature; instead we have “Gender Studies.  No art.  Instead we slosh dreams and feelings around on a canvas and celebrate the Apotheosis of the Self as though it were the Second Coming of something Else. And it probably is.

But returning to the initial question, Why do we not have leaders: the simple answer is that we elect people the same way we shop, same thought processes.  And once these bullies and conmen (and women) are in office, we expect to be showered with all the trinkets we were promised.  If we want leaders, we have to understand the architecture of leadership and somehow agree that it can take us where we want to go.

And so here is the List, with thanks to the Rutherford Institute for detailed accounts of  the House of Horrors:

In March 2009, only two months after being elected, Obama defended Bush’s unconstitutional National Security Agency spying program in court, insisting that actions authorized by the President, including illegally spying on American citizens, should be free from any judicial scrutiny whatsoever.

In April 2009, the Department of Homeland Security launched a program, Operation Vigilant Eagle, which calls for surveillance of military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, characterizing them as extremists and potential domestic terrorist threats because they may be “disgruntled, disillusioned or suffering from the psychological effects of war.” Coupled with the DHS’ report on “Rightwing Extremism,” which broadly defines rightwing extremists as individuals and groups “that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely,” these tactics bode ill for anyone seen as opposing the government—whether it be an Occupier, Tea Party supporter or a free speech protester.

In July 2009, Obama threatened to veto an oversight bill that would have required the president to inform lawmakers about covert CIA activities.

In December 2009, Obama, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, announced his intention to ramp up the military industrial complex’s war in Afghanistan and subsequently followed through on his plan.

In February 2010, the Department of Defense issued a U.S. Army field manual detailing the prospective internment and resettlement of American citizens in the event of another terrorist attack or natural disaster on U.S. soil. The leaked document confirmed the fears of many government critics, “from the Patriot movement on the right to Occupy on the left to Anonymous, anarchists, organized racists, survivalists, and plain old conspiracy theorists in between.”

In March 2010, the Department of Homeland Security began rolling out controversial full-body scanners to American airports. Despite an initial outcry about the invasive nature of the scanners and the enhanced patdowns of American citizens, government officials continued to tout the machines as safe and effective. A year later, an investigative report by ProPublica/PBS NewsHour, revealed that six to 100 U.S. airline passengers each year could get cancer from the machines, which were purchased with Obama’s stimulus funds.

In July 2010, the Obama administration arrested 23-year-old Army soldier Bradley Manning on charges that he leaked classified military and diplomatic documents to the anti-secrecy website, Wikileaks. Held in maximum solitary confinement for close to a year, treatment normally reserved for the most violent or dangerous of criminals, Manning has yet to be put on trial. His treatment was intended to send a clear warning to all those who would challenge the military empire—“DON’T EVEN CONSIDER IT.”

In May 2011, Obama expanded the war effort, with bombings in Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. Later that month, Obama signed a four-year extension of three controversial provisions in the USA Patriot Act that authorize the government to use aggressive surveillance tactics—even against American citizens—in the so-called war against terror. That same month, the U.S. Supreme Court in an 8-1 ruling in Kentucky v. King effectively decimated the Fourth Amendment by giving SWAT teams more leeway to break into homes or apartments in search of illegal drugs when they suspect the evidence might be destroyed. The Court, at the urging of the Obama administration, sanctioned warrantless raids, saying that police had acted lawfully and that was all that mattered.

In June 2011, a Department of Education “SWAT team” forced their way into the home of a California man, handcuffed him, and placed his three children in a squad car while they conducted a search of his home, allegedly over falsified student loans. Raids of this type are becoming increasingly common—more than 50,000 such raids occur every year in America—with federal agencies such as the State Dept., Dept. of Energy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service laying claim to their own SWAT teams. Also in June 2011, the FBI granted its 14,000 agents expansive additional powers, allowing them to investigate individuals using highly intrusive monitoring techniques, including infiltrating suspect organizations with confidential informants and photographing and tailing suspect American citizens, without having any factual basis for suspecting them of wrongdoing.

In September 2011, two American citizens were killed during a drone attack in Yemen as part of a government “kill list” operation in which Obama personally directs who should be targeted for death by military drones. Drone strikes, a signature policy of the Obama administration, have tripled since Obama took office.

In December 2011, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, which mandates that anyone suspected of terrorism against the United States be held in military custody indefinitely. This provision extends to American citizens on American territory. It was quietly signed into law by Obama on New Year's Eve.

In February 2012, Obama signed the FAA Reauthorization Act, which opens up American skies for the domestic use of armed surveillance drones, a $30 billion per year industry. Incredibly, no civil liberties protections for Americans were included in the legislation. By 2020, it is estimated that at least 30,000 drones will be crisscrossing the nation’s skies equipped with anti-personnel weapons and surveillance devices.

In March 2012, Congress overwhelmingly passed and Obama signed the anti-protest “Trespass Bill”—legislation that makes it a federal crime to protest or assemble in the vicinity of protected government officials. The bill’s language is so overly broad as to put an end to free speech, political protest and the right to peaceably assemble in all areas where government officials happen to be present. That same month, Obama issued an executive order stating that in the case of a war or national emergency, the federal government has the authority to take over almost every aspect of American society.

In April 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court—again at the urging of the Obama administration—declared that any person who is arrested and processed at a jail house, regardless of the severity of his or her offense (i.e., they can be guilty of nothing more than a minor traffic offense), can be subjected to a strip search by police or jail officials without reasonable suspicion that the arrestee is carrying a weapon or contraband.

In July 2012, the Obama administration began allowing the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) to store and “critically assess” information on innocent Americans for up to five years. Data recorded by the NCTC includes “records from law enforcement investigations, health information, employment history, travel and student records,” among other things.

In September 2012 and in the months preceding it, in major cities across the country, including Boston, Miami, Little Rock, and Los Angeles, the U.S. military carried out training exercises involving Black Hawk helicopters and uniformed soldiers. The exercises occurred in the middle of the night, with the full cooperation of the local police forces and generally without forewarning the public.

In October 2012, it was revealed that the Obama administration has been “secretly developing a new blueprint for pursuing terrorists, a next-generation targeting list called the ‘disposition matrix.’” The matrix goes beyond the president’s kill list to detail suspects beyond the reach of American drones. This disposition matrix is also overseen by the NCTC.

1114 INT skype v. dutch Teen

Skype, the Microsoft-owned online calls site, has shown scant regard for protecting user privacy. According to Russia Today, the company handed over sensitive account data pertaining to a teenage WikiLeaks fan from Holland to a Texas-based private cyber-intelligence firm, iSIGHT Partners.

A 16-year-old Dutch teenager’s user information was released to iSight without even so much as a warrant. RT reported:

The youngster was suspected of being involved in Operation Payback, an Anonymous-endorsed initiative that targeted the servers of PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and others after those companies blocked WikiLeaks from receiving online payment backs in December 2010. When hacktivists responded to the blockade by overflowing the servers of those sites with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, PayPal asked Dallas, Texas’ iSIGHT Partners Inc., a self-described“global cyber intelligence firm,” to investigate.

A report by Dutch investigative journalist Brenno de Winter, published on last week found that PayPal was attempting to track down activists affiliated with Anonymous. According to internal police filings, Winter reported, “Skype handed over the suspect’s personal information, such as his user name, real name, e-mail addresses and the home address used for payment.”

Ryan Gallagher at Slate noted that Skype’s actions here directly contravene its privacy policy:

Are We There Yet? Nathan Silver, the Aztec Calendar and Clackamas County

Air Cascadia
program date:
Wed, 11/07/2012

If Clackamas County Republicans acquired nuclear weapons...It might look a little like:

This week in Vienna – weren’t expecting that, were you? -  "Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman convened Israel's 27 ambassadors.  Nor was I…Vienna, eh?  Perhaps Israel is giving up their brutal invasion, occupation and destruction of the land and the people of Paslestine.  Perhaps they have decided to move back to Mitteleuropa, where they do indeed have a big ax to grind.  With Austria, maybe?

Ahhh, but  Israel is preparing to counter a Palestinian bid for enhanced United Nations status later this month.  Lieberman says that Palestine would be destroying the chances of peace talks if they pursued their bid.

Sounds like a threat to me…

Meanwhile, the Middle East monitor, citing Israeli sources, reported that Lieberman had also asked EU officials to fix a definite time for elections in the occupied territories in order to replace Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, who was described as "an obstacle to peace."

Abbas is “an obstacle to peace” and Israel’s nuclear arsenal – make that illegal, undeclared, never-been-inspected – arsenal is not a similar “obstacle”?

The comments came as Israel's private Channel 10 reported that Lieberman last month pledged to ensure the "collapse" of the Palestinian Authority (PA) if the bid for non-member status at the General Assembly moved forward.

With direct peace talks on hold for more than two years, the Palestinians have sought to push for their long-promised state in other ways, seeking to upgrade their status from an observer entity to that of a nonmember state.

Mahmoud Abbas has said he will table the resolution later this month, on either November 15 or 29, according to officials.

Such a move is likely to be voted through easily, requiring only a simple majority in the 193-member General Assembly, where the Palestinians have widespread support.

And we also spoke with Occupy Wall Street's Nathan Schneider on the Occupy effort to make sense of the East Coast's Climate carnage.  Now are they interested in talking about "The Weather"?

You betcha.

But will the words escape their throats gone dry from blowing corporate 'Persons'? Could it be a tree falling in the forest?  Are there any trees left large enough to leave behind whisper - let alone an imprint?

Ignition Ignation Ignotion...Now we know...

What it takes to shut  the shitaree down entirely.  Add 'Climate' to 'sex, religion and politics' as the top untalked about topic.  Neither presidential candidate mentioned it.  Even here at the bastion of Left Coast letters, I was criticized for asking a guest questions about climate change instead of questions about the economy.  Twenty-four hours later all the pundits, talking heads, intellectuals public and private were wondering why neither Romney nor Obama had mentioned the fact that virtually every physical system upon which our daily dose of weather depends is showing signs of irreversible changes .  Our most Byzantine algorithms are incapable of handling all the variables.  And in addition to defying prediction, Climate Change is unstoppable.  Even if the last automobile was parked forever and no fossil fuel saw the light of Ignition Day, even if agribusiness gave way to wilderness and even if birthrates plummeted,

Even If...

So Wall Street closed up shop as  Sheriff Sandy comes to town...Does this mean that the corporados have made their peace  (More likely made their piece) with "a higher being as they understand it"...or are they celebrating the official opening of Disaster Capitalism Season? Has Sandy blown into town, guns a-blazing, knocking the locks off the tech stocks and burning out the circuits of the last living system in the sky?

Last year at about this same time, Occupy Wall Street mobilized to shut down the markets. October 2012 as the Walls Came Down, between Humankind and the kind of inhuman weather that destroys the nation-state like since the Genghis Khan - and don't forget (That is, if you ever knew...) that the Khan reached the 'suburbs' of Vienna where he was stopped by a freakish fluke. So keep the Freak Flag flying, Keep your eye on the storm and your finger on the trigger because in the immortal words of Thales of Miletus: "The arrow is always coming because it never arrives." “For the last four years we’ve worked with dozens of groups on infiltrations, impersonations, and mass actions to try to make a difference. Check out the video on this page for a little taste! After the part where we ask for your support, you’ll see a scene where we hold a press conference pretending to be from the US Chamber of Commerce (big-money lobbyists who spend hundreds of millions blocking and dismantling environment, labor, housing, and health laws). The press conference goes well, and the Chamber’s real PR guy even shows up—comedic vigilante justice at its best. Stay tuned to this page for more videos in coming weeks.”

“But as we continued pulling off actions like the one against the Chamber, the Obama years rolled by, and as money's chokehold on democracy got tighter, we got more frantic. We even took it out on each other, and our “band” almost split up. But then, a sequence of unbelievable global uprisings, from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street, got us excited about the idea of a global revolution–and we began to realize that we can do it too.”

membership means more

your threat of quitting your membership gives me two options for analysis:

1) you gave money to Theresa via KBOO.

2) if Theresa died tomorrow, you'd give up your membership.

my interpretation

1) that's cool, man.  you support community-based radio based solely on your dedication to one weekly half-hour show. that demonstrates that Theresa's voice represents/intrigues you (and many, many others); however you don't feel represented by any one of the other 500 people who volunteer their time and energy in the 24/7 endevour, and you don't value the input (and miraculous existence!) of the other 5-10,000 members and ten times as many listeners; neither do you support the KBOO mission of including as many underrepresented voices as possible on the air, with natural turnover, schedule changes and opportunities as new people arrive.  Membership gives you the power to affect the decision-making, which is why you gave money to Theresa via KBOO; and, by golly, you will do everything in your power to keep her on the air, and you want the KBOO website visitors to know how you feel when they read the comments.  You'd even like them to join you in your fight.

2) wow.

my opinion

Personally, Theresa's show is one of my  favourites and there are plenty of shows that I not only don't like or don't listen to, but also complain about out loud.  It's my radio station, and, like my family, I will not be quiet when they need to shape up or ship out.

writing inflammatory statements on the webpage will remain simply that: inflammatory statements with a reaction or two from trolls (see the 20 pages of Anonymous written about me because of the audio I submitted that Jenka edited), which, in the end, result in: NOTHING.  If you want to chat with others online, that's fine, but you should know that nothing said here is considered in the Committee meetings. It's just an informal public forum, not policy binding.

my advice

Instead of threatening us (volunteers, members, listeners and our very existence), why not use your valuable internet time to phrase it as, for example, a question to which one of us could easily respond:  "Have there been any changes to Theresa's show?  I noticed lately that it has been preemented or even cut.  It is my favourite show. [I fear Air Cascadia will take its place--not necessary but very telling that you chose Chris' page to write it--ed.]. "  You can copy the question to Theresa's email (though I know from experience she doesn't respond) and/or print it out and put it in her cubby hole at the station. And/or show up to the meetings.  And/or call Theresa during her show--she takes calls, you know.  Ask her if she'll train or mentor you to do the same kind of work she does.

p.s.  Air Cascadia basically is the AM News is Chris Andreae: i was engineering {i'm flattered that you liked it}and was very sad when it was cut--but that is the way of the station; we adhere and adapt to the ever-fluctuating needs of the larger community--but i watched, with great pleasure, as it morphed into Air Cascadia.  Though i adore Dennis Bernstein, 15 less minutes of his voice is no skin off my back.

The anchor news program Democracy Now, conveiniently aired at 11 AM so that all could tune in was moved to 7 AM with a result that most if not all of the people who work nights won't be tuning in as they are still sleeping. Why couldn't this have been held on a Saturday or Sunday?
Air Cascadia is a very rough and unpolished program that leaves me tuning to OPB or just turning it off.
The choppy, emergent voice of Cris Andreae is certainly a large part in that.
If it is true that Press Watch will be axed for this then it will be an easy decision to withhold future pledges from this listener.

What happened to Presswatch?

Is Air Cascadia taking over what Therisa has been doing? If so, I may give up my membership. First, the am news gets axed to accomodate Democracy Now, now is Presswatch going under the plow?
