The World Meets Africa

Over the years there have been many fruitful musical collaborations between Africa and the rest of the world.  Sometimes as the result of expatriate African artists working in Europe or America.  Other times it's been westerners traveling to the continent to work with African artists.  We'll hear Indian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia's recent work with Tinariwen (she will be here at the Alberta Rose Theatre April 24th)...  Also, American guitarists Henry Kaiser & David Lindly recording with Rossy of Madagascar...  Malian kora maestro Toumani Diabaté working with Taj Mahal, the Flamenco group Ketama, and avant-jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd...  American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater recorded in Bamako with local luminaries...  Bluegrass/jazz banjo player

Frikyiwa

Frikyiwa, founded in 1998, is the brainchild of French musician/producer Frédéric Galliano The label released a series of CDs of neo-traditional music from Francophone West Africa, several of which were recorded on location in Mali and Sénégal.  Perhaps more familiar to western listeners are the Frikyiwa remix collections, produced by Galliano and other electronic artists, two of which were released in the U.S. by Six Degrees.  On this week's Africa O-Yé!

Obo Addy, the Ghanaian master drummer, bandleader, and teacher who made Portland his home for over 30 years, passed away in 2012, but his influence in Portland and the Pacific Northwest continues, having spawned a love for African music in musicians and listeners alike.  Obo's greatest contribution was his tireless work in the region's schools --providing exposure to African music and culture for generations of children.
Join DJ Charlie (WorldBeat Connection) & Andy Hosch (Africa O-Yé!) along with Susan Addy, Mic Crenshaw, and other guests for 3-hours of of music and dialog, remembering Obo's life and music.  Obo Addy gave a great deal to this community, and his legacy remains strong.

While the special ran from 1:00-4:00, this play list is for portion of the show from 2-4 pm, hosted by Andy Hosch.   Please follow this link to learn more about the Obo Addy Legacy Projects fundraiser music event coming on Saturday, Oct. 18
