A Different Nature
A Different Nature Mission Statement: A Sustained Explorations of New, Experimental Music and Sonic Art
A Different Nature is a curatorial program of genre-defying avant garde music and spoken word that champions historic and modern sound art and spotlights, new, emergent experimental music and audio art generally not heard anywhere else.
The program's format provides the space for deep listening to pieces not confined to pop song lengths and shows are generally focused on an artist, school of music or discipline, record label or art movement.
A Different Nature is a collaborative effort of the ADN Collective, who each curate a show every week on an informal rotating basis, or a group show, depending on the subject at hand.
A Different Nature was founded in the late Seventies by Richard Francis, who fearlessly championed new music and the unheard Avant Garde. His programs went into exhaustive detail on individual artists, labels and musical disciplines. He also spearheaded many important events on the air, such as the 2001 and 2008 Dada and Surrealism festivals that dominated the airwaves for days on end and involved many in the local avant garde community as well as many KBOO programmers.
Richard passed away in 2009 but it's our hope to carry on with his mission of introducing listeners to unheard new music as a collective of his collaborators and listeners.

This time on A Different Nature, we delve into the program's past, and play gems from founder Richard Francis' own record collection. It's KBOO's spring membership drive, so A Different Nature listeners will have the opportunity to pledge their support for the station during the program. For forty years, the San Francisco Avant-Garde band The Residents have basked in relative obscurity, much of it self-imposed. Their earliest modus operandi had them creating works under their 'theory of obscurity', first coined by N. Senada, who may or may not be an actual person. One aspect of the theory is that a work is created with the intent of never releasing a work until every participant has forgotten about it - or something like that.
Another aspect of the Residents is that they've kept their real identity a secret for many decades, with a few people speaking on their behalf in a business capacity who may or may not be Residents themselves.. Hmmm..
We did, however, manage to get Homer Flynn, The Resident's creative director and visual Major Domo on the phone, while he was, uh, helping the band on the Eastern leg of their Wonder of Weird 40th Anniversary tour.
Homer was more than generous with his time and lots of questions get answered, including a long-time rumour around KBOO's history.

Honoring LAWRENCE D. "BUTCH" MORRIS
February 10, 1947 - January 29, 2013
Tonight on A Different Nature, we salute Butch Morris, the originator of Conduction : a type of structured free improvisation wherein the conductor directs and conducts an improvising ensemble with a series of hand and baton gestures. Morris' conductions have received generally positive reviews, and are considered very unique, not quite fitting into any one musical genre. As critic Thom Jurek has written, "There are no records like Butch Morris' conduction sides, nor could there be, though he wishes there were." and Ed Hazell writes, "At his best, Morris can shake players out of their old habits, or place a microscope on one aspect of a musician's artistry and build an orchestral fantasia around it."

It encapsulates the venue's ability to nurture bands of professional players joining to make music that is all at once edgy, catchy, and danceable. Butch Morris guides the orchestra of Nublu residents - Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits), Eddie Henderson (Herbie Hancock), Didi Gutman (Brazilian Girls), and Sylvia Gordon (Kudu) - through a series of musical flavors that touch on jazz, pop, noise and dance floor jams.

-Conduction #192 (Italy, 2010) --we played most of this amazing piece, 3 out of 4 parts of a work entitled "The Holy Ghost and The Infinite Spirit of Albert Ayler" Conduction® No. 192 “Possible Universe” by Butch Morris. He had an all-star cast on hand-- essentially a double orchestra, placed on the stage in stereo, with one of each instrument to each side. The only musician without a double was Alan Silva on synthesizer. The guitarists Jean Paul Bourelly and On ka’a Davis were on either side of Silva with Chad Taylor and Hamid Drake on percussion to the outsides of the guitarists. Silvia Bolognesi played bass on Hamid’s side, and Harrison Bankhead was near Chad. The horns on the Taylor/Bankhead side were Meg Montgomery (trumpet), Greg Ward (alto sax), David Murray (tenor sax & bass clarinet) and Tony Cattano (trombone). On the Drake/Bolognesi side, they were matched by Riccardo Pittau, Pasquale Innarella, Evan Parker and Joe Bowie.
Then we played an interview with an Italian television journalista, with an interpreter, until finally Morris just demonstates with his rehearsal singers -- an all vocal ensemble (!).
We closed with a performance of Conduction #5 from WNYC's Americathon 1987 Festival, featuring Jason Kao Hwang- violin, Bill Horvitz - guitar electronics, Wayne Horvitz - piano electronics, Carol Emmanuel- harp, Zeena Parkins- harp, Wilber Morris- bass, Tom Cora- cello, and a Philly group called Relache.

The first half of the show we listened to some collaborations between Merzbow and Richard Pinhas, and then later on we heard from several recent collaborations that Nurse With Wound has done with different artists.

He was a founding member of the surreal soundscape group Points of Friction (1981-present), recorded and released solo sound work as Agog, and took part in many many collaborations over the past 30 years.
He leaves behind a great legacy of friendships and large amounts of recorded sound art and truly unique visual art, speaking of the 6000+ photos he took recently of various naturally eroded materials while hiking, strange arrangements of objects and other various abstractions, as he always had the exquisite skill of channelling the fascinating and odd through any number of mediums. Whether it was with mud, paint and found objects, scissors, magazines, trash and glue, hallucinogenic photo manipulations on a computer, or an amplified birdcage tickled with a gigantic comb, Damian was endlessly enthralled by creating. He was a collector of junk materials and built his own instruments and sculptures.
The music of Agog was homemade musique concrete - amazing tape collages. It was really outstanding work that stood above a lot of what was coming out of the cassette culture at that time. Damian's work was superbly recorded and edited, and lovingly packaged. His own cassettes reached fewer and fewer people over the years as his packaging grew more and more elaborate.
Damian's music and art remains little heard and known for the most part.

Tonight we listened to Lionel Marchetti, including his masterwork "Knud un Nom de Serpent (Le Cercle des Entrailles)." Marchetti is a self-taught electro-acoustic/musique concrete composer who also performs live electronics with Jerome Noetinger and others.

Portland-based Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan will be performing at Lewis and Clark College this coming Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 pm. The concert, titled "From Indonesia to Portland: Traditional and Contemporary Gamelan Music from Java" will feature VSB along with Indonesian master musician Aloysius Suwardi, renowned Berkeley-based Javanese teacher and musician Midiyanto and members of the Seattle-based Gamelan Pacifica. An extended installment of "A Different Nature", as the collective brings you their annual Dia de los Muertos show. ADN founding host Richard Francis was heavily into celebrating Dia de los Muertos during the last years of his life, so now, every year around this time we pay homage to Richard and others who have passed, with a musical tribute. As usual, expect the unexpected. Dr. Zomb and friends will bring experimental and electronic music related to the theme [and some perhaps unrelated...] plus ritual music of funeral lamentations, ancestor worship, and the afterlife from many different cultures.
